Club Profile

Taken from the 1974 – 75 Winter Programme By Susan Fox, Honorary Secretary

Stockton Y.F.C. is the oldest club in County Durham, originating in the 1920’s.  In those early years the club was known as a Calf Club consisting of 14 members, with a steady increase in membership. Although the club kept going throughout the second the Second World War, the membership decreased.  After the war the club again flourished, drawing members from North Yorkshire and South Durham Areas.  The club was re-named Stockton & District Y.F.C. and then finally Stockton Y.F.C. as it is known today.Throughout the years the club has improved its standard, being highly honoured to win the County Club Efficiency Competition 5 times. Stockton began its own Charity Projects in 1968.  From 1968/70, the club raised £500 to buy two Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.  From 1970/72 the club again raised £300 to buy two Ripple Beds fro the Geriatric Department at St. Ann’s Hospital, Stockton.  Finally from 1972/73 the club donated a further £300 to Marske Hall the Teesside Cheshire Home for the Physically Handicapped. The work involved in raising this money took the form of numerous week-end Ploughing Marathons, Paper-sack Collections, Sponsored Walks and the profits made at Beat Dances.Stockton Y.F.C. has varied programmes both in the Winter and Summer.  The usual talks and slides, domino drives and quizzes are held from October to March.  The highlight of our 1974 Winter Programme being a demonstration od *KARATE*.  The summer programmes consists of Pre-Rally Competitions, Farm Walks, Nature Trails, Car Treasure Hunts and again in 1974 we visited a Gliding Club and members were taken on a *Breathtaking Flight*.  The Club holds its Annual Christmas Party, Dinner Dance, Barbecue, Summer Trip and Gymkhana.  Also one or two Beat Dances are held during Christmas and The New Year.  The general atmosphere in a Young Farmers’ Club is key to its success or failure.  Those members who work together will result in building a club with sound foundations for the future.

On 18th April 2009, Stockton Young Farmers Club celebrated its 80th Anniversary.  Current Members wanted this celebration to include as many past members as possible, as without them they wouldn't have the club they do today.  As 150 people sat down for a three course meal, at Darlington Football Club, we as current members and the event organisers, sat with smiles on our faces and chinked our wine glasses - thinking we've done it! And as our president, Mr David Hall did a short speech he confirmed this - he asked people to put their hands up to show which decade they started/attended YFC; he started with the present and approximately 20 people raised their hands – a good start, then he went backwards through the decades and we had representation for all, which created some giggles, but when he dared to say 1940's and half a dozen people still raised their hands, there was a short silence of surprise followed by a rapturous round of applause.  What a fantastic age range to celebrate this momentous occasion. Following David's praise to all people in the room for helping to get the club to the point we are today, we had a talk from Mr Charles Haigh, a farmer/contractor from Wakefield.  He took us all on a journey through his farming days, starting back at when he first started with a few chickens in the garden and finishing with slowly handing his business over to his family.  Our club chairperson, Miss Katie Milner, then thanked Mr Haigh and everyone for attending.  She also invited people to get up and dance, as the disco took us on a journey through the ages! A great night was had by all, and as a member of Stockton YFC for the last 13 years and current Vice Chairman, I was overwhelmed by the response from all past members and associates, in both helping us collect memorabilia to be displayed on the night, and in coming along and joining in the party with us – I’m not sure why I was surprised, I guess it was just a great example of that Young Farmers spirit, which obviously never leaves us!!!

Our Achievements

  • Achievements 2008:
We started the year as always with the annual presentation meal, held at the Londonderry Arms Simon did us proud with a great meal and a good night. We presented a cheque to last year’s charity the Small Talk Friday Group which is a local stroke support. Through out this year we have been raising funds for the British Heart foundation. The next high point of the year was the wedding of two of my best friends and current Stockton Young Farmers, Claire and Dave in March. Following on from this we head towards this year rally we had a successful day with members competing in all sorts of different classes from the pantomime cow to sports to the recycled palette challenge. One of the most successful entries of the day was Graeme’s self propelled buggie made from scrap materials which won on rally day and then went forward to Northern Area Field Day where he was 3rd. Overall the club came 2nd in the small clubs section on rally day. So well done to everyone who took part. The club was also very successful in the county quiz with one of the junior teams coming 3rd overall and despite the club having the 3 highest placed seniors in the county quiz being Rebecca Alderson, Claire Wase and myself we only came 2nd overall as a team!! We have had some very interesting meetings this year we have been for a visit to big sheep and little cow farm, carriage driving, trip to see the lifeboat at Hartlepool, a talk on fund raising from Cancer Research talk, craft nights, ball room dancing, a nature walk, we have been strawberry picking as well as trip to the cinema, ice skating and bowling. We had two Disco’s at Sedgefield racecourse which proved to be very profitable for the club. We have had good year and hope the club can continue to thrive and prosper in the next twelve months.
