- Achievements in 2008: Our Public Speaking Team of Katherine Berry, Alice Bird and Katie Sanderson took the trophy home. The same three were joined by Gemma Watson to win the Intermediate Brainstrust. Alice got the press reporter trophy, and also the Junior member of the year so many trophies that I think most of her year will have been spent polishing her awards. David Grieves won Senior member of the Year and the Club won the F.C. Johnson Trophy for the club competing most above county level. Well done to everyone for contributing to this award. These weren’t the first awards the club had gained, as the previous years competition came to a close the cookery team of Katherine Berry, Alice Bird and Katie Sanderson had been down to competitions weekend doing very well and Gemma Watson had gained a Competent in the flower arranging. As the competition scene got quieter for Christmas we certainly didn’t, quite literally at times! Christmas card making again seemed very popular and then came the Grand Draw and Whist Drive, again a very successful evening raising money for the club and Marie Curie Cancer Care (our charity of the year). Then of course comes our attempt to be the last Choir Standing - Carol Singing, boy they love us now, we even now have requests, well I think you would class it as a request, it goes along the lines of ‘No more Little Donkey, pleeease’! Again more money was raised all of it this time going to Marie Curie. The Christmas period came to a climax when the Club visited the Pantomime. New Year and more members. The year started discussing the summer programme and deciding we needed something to entertain all these new people, and entertain we did! Katie and Katherine have done a sterling job as we have had a fun packed programme ranging from Rounders to visiting the RNLI Northern Area Weekend proved to again be very successful for Elwick and County Durham. Our County winning Team Speaking and Brainstrust teams came 4th and 3rd respectively, with Alice coming 3rd in Junior member of the year and David being 5th in Senior member. Elwick showed we may be small but we can still pack a punch, winning best small club again at Rally. The Northern Area field day again had good results for County Durham, with a lot of input from Elwick yet again. Followed by the Royal Show with our very successful cookery team of Katherine Berry, Alice Bird and Katie Sanderson coming 3rd. June came to a close and the Annual Club Ceilidh proved to be another successful night with profits again being split with our charity.
